FLEET SHRINKS, VOSCO PLANS TO BUILD NEW SHIPS
Vietnam’s “big brother” in maritime transport, Vosco, plans to invest in building new oil tankers and bulk carriers after years of being unable to acquire new vessels. According to its latest report, Vosco has proposed purchasing two Supramax bulk carriers and constructing three new MR product tankers with a capacity of approximately 50,000 DWT each. Additionally, the company plans to build four Ultramax vessels, with a capacity ranging from 62,000 to 66,000 DWT.
Currently, Vosco manages and operates 13 ships with a total tonnage of about 420,000 DWT, nine of which are company-owned. However, since 2013, Vosco has only decommissioned old ships and has not invested in new ones due to the impacts of COVID-19, financial constraints, and restrictions on purchasing/building new vessels.
Vosco’s leadership highlights that the current fleet does not meet environmental and energy efficiency requirements set by the IMO, particularly the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), which took effect on November 1, 2022. Without investment in new ships, Vosco will face challenges competing with regional and domestic shipping companies, especially as other enterprises adapt more flexibly by investing in next-generation ships that comply with emission control regulations.
