The Vietnam Maritime Administration has recently adjusted the announcement regarding the opening of Berth No. 5 at Lach Huyen Port, Hai Phong (Phase 1). Located in the Lach Huyen area on Cat Hai Island, Hai Phong City, this berth falls under the jurisdiction of the Hai Phong Maritime Port Authority.

Berth No. 5 features a length of 450 meters and is designed to accommodate container vessels up to 165,000 DWT with reduced load, with a maximum draft of 14.8 meters. It is equipped to handle both domestic and international ships for cargo handling and other related maritime services.

The Vietnam Maritime Administration has tasked the Hai Phong Maritime Port Authority with overseeing maritime activities in this area, ensuring compliance with safety, security, fire prevention, and environmental protection regulations. The port authority is also authorized to collect fees as stipulated by law.

The investor, Hateco Hai Phong International Container Terminal Co., Ltd., is required to operate the port in accordance with approved design specifications, ensuring safety and environmental standards are met. They are also permitted to collect fees as per legal provisions.

Berths No. 5 and No. 6 represent the largest deep-water port project in Northern Vietnam, invested by Hateco Group. Officially operational since February 2025 under the name Hateco Hai Phong International Container Terminal (HHIT), the port welcomed its first commercial vessel on February 6.

This project aims to construct two modern container berths at Lach Huyen Port, facilitating direct import and export activities between Northern Vietnam and markets in Europe and America. It also seeks to maximize the natural advantages and strategic location of the Dinh Vu – Cat Hai Economic Zone, promoting socio-economic development in Hai Phong and the broader Northern region.

Commenced in the third quarter of 2022, the project boasts a total investment of over VND 8,900 billion. It includes two berths, each 450 meters in length, capable of accommodating container ships up to 18,000 TEUs, along with two barge berths measuring 200 meters, designed for vessels up to 160 TEUs. Additional infrastructure encompasses protective works, storage yards, service facilities, anchorage areas, and connections to the public maritime channel at Lach Huyen.

The completion and operation of Berth No. 5 are poised to enhance the capacity and efficiency of Hai Phong Port, solidifying its role as a pivotal maritime hub in the region.
