VIETNAM’S SHIPPING FLEET RANKS 22ND GLOBALLY

Over the past 30 years, Vietnam’s maritime industry has made remarkable strides, with its fleet now ranked 3rd in ASEAN and 22nd globally. The Vietnam Shipowners’ Association (VSA) has played a vital role in policy advisory, international networking, and fostering a competitive environment.

Currently, Vietnam’s fleet consists of approximately 1,500 ships, with a total tonnage of 13.7 million tons, and the fleet’s average age is younger than the global average. Within this, VSA owns a fleet totaling 4.2 million DWT, with 25 members operating ships over 10,000 DWT.

Vietnam’s geographical advantages favor the development of maritime transport, underscoring the need for collaboration between businesses, associations, and government agencies. An example of this collaboration is the fee exemption and reduction for seaport infrastructure in Ho Chi Minh City for waterway cargo, showcasing effective partnerships.

However, the maritime sector faces challenges, including security, safety, environmental protection, compliance with international standards, and digital transformation. VSA is actively pursuing international cooperation, adopting technology, and enhancing workforce skills.

The association is committed to innovation, improving service quality, and advancing green maritime transport. A significant shift is required, particularly in adopting alternative fuels, reducing emissions, and aligning with global trends.
